![]() ![]() It also started the "you'll go insane in the daaaark!" Trend which I fucking hate. But somewhere in there (right around Amnesia: Dark Decents release) it suddenly became trendy to have a HUGE puzzle solving, light on lore, helpless protagonist who stealth hides from the shambling monster type games which killed the genre for me. I think videogames could be a great medium for horror that builds the tension and doubles it by having you for a protagonist. The atmosphere was great, the soundtrack. Great atmosphere, actual plot and a very in depth world with lots of lore, not a huge reliance on Jumpscares (no reliance actually) and best of all a protagonist that can fight back. I seem to be the differing factor here in this community as I love survival horror and have no problems with horror games.īut I had to say this is why I still miss the original Silent Hill games (The firsr four) by Team Silent. Horror in a video game means you have to find something for the player to do while also trying to scare them and I think it ends up being somewhat restrictive. ![]() Other mediums build tension in different ways, have different types of antagonists, use bizarre imagery, etc. ![]() It's this "Is there gonna be a jump scare?" type tension that isn't fun for a long period of time. It certainly makes them really intense, but that's part of the reason I don't like to play them. There's also a focus on jump scares that I really dislike. A lot of them seem to share very similar aesthetic sensibilities too, like a monster in one horror game could basically be placed in any other and it wouldn't seem out of place. The gameplay tends to be either action-horror like Resident Evil 4, or a survival horror/adventure/stealth hybrid where you're utterly helpless and sneak around avoiding monsters. I'm the same way, but honestly I find that it's because video game horror is really one note in comparison to what you find in other mediums. ![]()
